Problems of Indian Students in Learning English: Reasons and Solutions

As English teachers, we have been observing that the students find it difficult to speak and write English even at the graduate level after years of learning. This Problem is not confined to students getting educated in the regional language medium alone. Many students getting educated in English medium also find it difficult to write even single grammatically correct sentences in English. Apart from this we also find that students have much difficulty in understanding a subject by listening to it. We have four types of communication skills viz. oral, aural, written, and reading. The problem lies with the teachers who impart the above skills to the students in the primary schools. Almost all the government schools and many of the private schools in our country do not have exclusive English teachers to teach the subject. Any other subject teacher having knowledge of English plays the role of an English Teacher. As a result the quality of English gets declined day-by-day. This paper tries to focus on many such problems of Indian Students in learning English, the reasons and solutions to these problems. More
