Teaching English Language And Literature In Non-Native Contexts

Teaching English literature and literature written in English by non-native writers has gained importance and worldwide recognition. In many parts of world today, there is a strong demand for English as a language of international communication of business and commerce and higher education. On the other hand since long past, there has been a tendency to meet this demand by offering traditional type of English course centered upon the literary classic of the language. Teaching English literature through syllabus in higher education is still in practice in non-native countries. According to the modern requirements, the teaching methods are to be modified by the teacher while teaching English literature in non-native context keeping in mind the linguistic skill base competence and human value based development of civilization. Recognizing the need of the significant role of English literature and language in teaching & learning process, this paper aims to discuss the fact, difficulties and remedies in teaching English Literature in non-native context. Further, it emphasizes the importance of inclusion of literature in the studies and the need of new methods of teaching English in non-native contexts. More
