Enhancing the speech skills of learners in an ESL classroom through practice activities

Sharon. E, Lecturer, Sathyabhama University

In an age of globalization and cutthroat competition, the prized job at the end of an interview obviously goes to the one who expresses himself/herself best. The emphasis laid by recruiting agencies on communication skills is by no means an exaggerated one. This paper suggests a few speech activities such as introducing oneself, two minute speech, giving directions, debates, interviews, group discussions, enacting plays, etc, to name a few. The teacher can grade the activities according to the level of difficulty and practice one activity at a time. The language teacher acts as a guide and facilitator, who initially lays out the guidelines for each activity and then offers suggestions and constructive feedback to prove especially useful in an ESL classroom, which often consists of a mixed group of students ranging from the competent and average to the poor and weak learners. The suggested activities help the language learners to hone their speech skills as they gradually gain confidence and improve their diction, pronunciation and sentence construction. More
