Test to Assess and Improve Oral Proficiency of U. G. Students

N. Sudararajan, Associate Prof. of English,
Directorate of Students Welfare, Tamilnadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore

The paper lists is a series of tests (Discrimination of phonemes, Listening Comprehension with Listening Close, Thematic Apperception Test, Story Retelling, Summarizing the reading material, Group Discussion, Brainstorming and Oratory) that can assess the oral proficiency of students of LEP and help the teacher construct remedial exercises. As understanding the way English functions and using it successfully involves a good knowledge and control of many interdependent linguistic components, the teacher should construct remedial exercises that include first Phonetics and then Lexis and Syntax. The objective of testing and application of remedial exercises is to make the target students communicate freely in the classroom. Such communication is questioning, answering the questions, summarizing the reading material, synthesizing the notes given, participation in a discussion and speaking briefly on a given topic. The paper explains the process of testing and objectives of remedial exercises. More
